Scruffy is Sick now

My poor little Scruffy had a seizure last night that scared me half to death and I thought he wasn't going to make it

It was about 11:30 last night as I was finishing up some things on the computer with Scruffy and Buddy laying on the floor sleeping close by when all of a sudden I heard a banging noise! I first thought it was Buddy trying to get into things he shouldn't. Buddy has a bad habit of chewing up all kinds of things. Anyway, when I got up to look I noticed Scruffy on the floor flopping around and when I called his name he didn't respond. I picked him up and he immediately went stiff with his little legs curled up to his body. I was petrified and carried him into the other room laying him on the floor while I pet him and talked to him. He was shaking uncontrollably while stiff and I noticed his eyes were rolled back in his head. This lasted for 10 minutes or more and then slowly he started to come out of it by first panting but still stiff and shaking and then licking me in the face while I talked to him. He seemed thirsty so I put his water dish close by and when he was finally able to stand he drank a little water. Even after he came out of it he looked bad and Really Scared. Poor little guy

This morning I called the Vet Hospital I take my pets to but Scruffy's doctor was on vacation till next Monday so I debated on what to do ~ should I see another doctor or wait for his? I decided to make an apt. for next Monday morning with his doctor and if anything out of the ordinary happens in the meantime take him in ASAP to see one of the other doctors.
I did a lot of research and found out they will need to run several tests to determine why he's having the seizures and this can be Very expensive so seeing one good veterinarian is worth the wait providing Scruffy doesn't get any worse. I've had added expense in the past with Buddy and Rooster when they have seen the other doctors verses the one I originally wanted to see treat them.

Scruffy had a tiny seizure about a year ago when we were leaving for a camping trip. He gets Real Excited when he knows he's going in the car ~ He Loves it! Anyway that was the first time he ever had a seizure and it was So Much different then this last one that I wrote it off to over excitement ~ I should have taken him in for a check up then but I didn't

Here's what Scruffy looks like now at 6 yr. he weighs about 10 lbs
he'll be 7 yrs. on October 28th


Doing the research I also found out that Toy Breeds are more susceptible to seizures although Large Breeds can have them Too ~~ Scruffy is a Pekingese/Yorkshire Terrier mix

I am sorry to hear about scruffy being sick now. I hope that all goes well until you can get him in to the vet. I know that dogs can suffer from epilepsy also because my step grandpents had a collie that was epileptic.

Yes I've read about that illness being one of the causes of seizures in dogs. Unfortunately there are So Many other things that can cause this too so it's best to let the doctor run all the tests that he needs to so Scruffy gets the best treatment possible. So far so good Scruffy hasn't had another seizure since this last one so hopefully he won't before next Monday when he sees his doctor.

sounds like he is doing well so far, i hope it all goes ok and they can find out what is causeing it.

It would be nice if that was a possibility but I seriously doubt it at this Vet Hospital But ~ I can still ask about a payment option

i personally have never been to a vet that would be willing to owrk with me, but you never know until you ask.

Good luck with your vet! I've also found that they generally aren't very flexible.

Sorry it's been awhile since I posted anything about Scruffy ~~ So far the doctor can't find a reason for his seizures He did the blood and urine tests and the blood came back with a slightly high red cell count but nothing else. The doctor wants to see Scruffy in a month to run more tests. So far he hasn't had anymore seizures The doctor told me the small seizure he had last year was a petite seizure and the more recent one was a grand mall seizure. If Scruffy has more frequent seizures he would have to go on medication but only if I'm willing to give him the meds. for the rest of his life. The meds are an extreme measure for dogs who have seizures several times in a month.

Oh Karen ~ I wanted to mention that doctor Stoehr (this is how his name is spelled) said he remembered you and the girls (your Bichons) and he already knew about Mira dying because one of the doctor's from Tahoma Vets. had talked to him. I told him about Iko, he was very happy that Rita got another pekingese so soon after Mira's death to help ease the pain of losing her.

How do you like Dr. Stoehr? He is a nice guy I think. I hope that Scruffy doesn't have any more problems. Rita had one of her dogs on meds. for the same thing. I think it was Buddy, her Boston that died several years ago. It helped him quite a bit.
Try & keep your babies cool. I put mine in a wading pool & they seem to like it. I am taking care of Maddy today & she doesn't like water at all!

I really liked doctor Stoehr (this is the way it was spelled on my copy of the bill), he's very nice and he really cares about animals, that's important in a Vet.

I had to shave Buddy & Scruffy today! I'll try to get a before and after picture of them posted tomorrow if I have the time ~ Wish I had a pool for them but then I don't think they would use it if I did, they don't like their baths much less a pool. Do you know it was 100 degrees today on our deck in the shade OMGosh who knows what the actual temp was in the sun here on South Hill?? Your So lucky being close to the water where you are, so your a little bit cooler than we are up here. Thank goodness tomorrow is cooling down a bit.

That is great news Connie so far that he could not find a problem with him. I hope that all continues to go well with him.
